Consuming carbonated beverages on a daily basis can have a variety of unwanted negative effects on your body and yes diet drinks are included.
When you think about it, apart from the great taste, carbonated beverages do not contain any real nutrients except sugar and calories that you really don’t need. Drinking water is the best way to quench your thirst. And consumption of water is free of calories.
Once we understand that the body is more than 70% water and that water controls pretty much every aspect of our health, we can then begin to understand just how important it really is to drink the required amount of water daily and why almost every health expert and fitness guru are always pushing you to drink more water as it is an essential part of being healthy.
While the sweetness of carbonated beverages may be tempting, we recommend swapping you soda and rather reaching for clean, sweet tasting, filtered water instead.
Making the Switch
If you drink soft drinks often we understand that making the switch from carbonated beverages to water, ‘cold turkey’ can be very difficult and some would say a real challenge. We would suggest starting by increasing your water intake by one to two glasses each day. As you get used to drinking more water, and start to enjoy it, start cutting back on your carbonated beverages. Small steps to living a healthier life.
To help, be creative with your water we recommend adding some lemon, cucumber, or fruit such as strawberries, blueberries, cut up orange etc. to add some delicious flavor. Jamie Oliver has some great ideas on this.
Setting reminders to drink water can also help. Set a timer on your phone to remind you or download the app called Water Balance (there is an app for both iPhone & Android). These apps will assist you to keep track of how much water intake you have had during the day and it will send you reminder messages to keep drinking water until you have drank the required amount of daily water.
Another idea could be to get a water bottle that you constantly keep with you and mark it with time milestones so that you can remember to drink water regularly throughout the day.
